Accra's Kotoka International Airport (ACC) is one of West Africa's busiest gateways. British Airways, Delta, Emirates, and several African carriers all operate here — which means real price competition if you know how to leverage it.

1. Book 8–10 weeks ahead for international routes

Accra is not as over-served as Lagos or Nairobi, so cheap seats get picked up quickly. For routes to London, Dubai, or New York, the cheapest fares typically appear 8 to 10 weeks before departure and disappear fast.

2. Dubai is the cheapest long-haul destination from Accra

Emirates operates Accra–Dubai as a key West African route and frequently discounts it. Dubai also serves as a connecting hub for onward flights to Asia and Australia — often cheaper than connecting through European hubs.

3. Connecting through Addis Ababa cuts costs to East Africa and beyond

Ethiopian Airlines (ADD) is the most cost-effective way to reach East Africa, South Africa, or Asia from Accra. Their Addis hub has the widest African network on the continent, and fares from ACC via ADD are often far cheaper than direct options.

4. Avoid December and Easter entirely

Ghana's Diaspora community travels home heavily in December, driving prices to two to three times their normal level from October onwards. Easter also sees major spikes.

The best value months are February, March, May, September, and October.

5. Check both ACC and Abidjan (ABJ)

If you're flexible and don't mind a few hours of travel, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) is a short bus ride from Accra and has a strong Air France/Air Côte d'Ivoire presence that sometimes undercuts ACC fares to Europe.

6. Compare total fares — Ghana's airport taxes are high

Ghana levies significant departure taxes. Always compare total fares including taxes rather than base prices. A cheaper headline fare from one OTA can end up more expensive than a slightly higher one after all fees are added.
