Banjul International Airport (BJL) is The Gambia's only international airport and one of West Africa's most interesting aviation stories. The charter market for European tourists means seasonal fluctuations are sharp, but scheduled carriers — Binter, Brussels Airlines, and connections through regional hubs — offer year-round options.

1. Brussels Airlines for Europe

Brussels Airlines has a consistent scheduled service from Banjul to Brussels, offering one of the most reliable European connections from BJL. From Brussels, the rest of Europe is accessible by train or onward flight.

2. Dakar is your best connecting hub

Dakar (DSS) is just a few hours from Banjul by road and has significantly more carrier options and flight frequencies. For most international routes, flying from Dakar rather than Banjul will give you more choice and often lower fares.

Air Senegal, Turkish Airlines, and Air France all offer stronger options from Dakar than available directly from Banjul.

3. The charter market means cheap seats in the off-season

The UK and Scandinavian charter market to The Gambia (a popular winter sun destination) means charter flights from London, Manchester, and Stockholm are sometimes available at very low prices, especially for off-peak travel. Check charter operators alongside scheduled carriers.

4. Book 8–12 weeks ahead for scheduled services

For Brussels Airlines and other scheduled services from BJL, 8 to 12 weeks ahead is the right booking window.

5. Cheapest months from Banjul

The tourist season in The Gambia is November–April (dry season). Ironically, this period can have cheap seats from Europe to Banjul but expensive seats from Banjul outbound. For the cheapest outbound fares, May–June and September–October are best.

For most international travel, treat Dakar as your real hub. Banjul works well for Europe via Brussels, but Dakar unlocks far more options.
