Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is South Africa's second-busiest airport and one of the most scenic departure points on the continent. Competition between airlines is strong on key routes, which means real opportunities for cheap fares — if you know when to look.

1. Book 6–10 weeks ahead for long-haul routes

For flights from Cape Town to Europe, the UK, or the Middle East, prices tend to bottom out 6 to 10 weeks before departure. Airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines release discounted inventory in this window as they work to fill seats before the close-in surge.

For domestic routes (Cape Town to Johannesburg, Durban, or Port Elizabeth), book 2–3 weeks out. South African domestic fares are often cheapest mid-booking-cycle.

> Quick tip: Set a price alert on Farefinda for your route. We'll notify you the moment the fare drops to a level worth booking.

2. Fly via Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul — not direct

Non-stop flights from Cape Town to London or Paris are expensive and infrequent. Routing through Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), or Istanbul (IST) can cut prices by 30–50% and adds only 2–4 hours to your journey.

Emirates and Qatar Airways both hub through CPT and frequently offer competitive fares on these connecting routes.

3. Avoid South African school holidays

South Africa's school calendar drives domestic and regional demand. The three peak periods to avoid for cheap fares:

  • December to mid-January (summer holidays)
  • Late March to early April (Easter)
  • Late June to late July (winter school holidays)
Flying February, May, August, or October consistently yields the cheapest fares out of Cape Town.

4. Check Johannesburg (JNB) as an alternative hub

For some long-haul routes, you'll find better prices and more flight options by flying from Cape Town to Johannesburg first, then connecting internationally. JNB has more carrier competition and more direct routes to Asia, the Americas, and East Africa.

The cost of a Cape Town–Johannesburg domestic leg is often far less than the savings on the international fare.

5. Compare one-way fares

On long-haul routes from CPT, two separate one-way tickets — outbound on one airline, return on another — often undercuts a single return booking. This is especially true on routes to London and Amsterdam where multiple carriers compete each direction differently.

6. Use a comparison tool — prices vary by channel

The same flight can be priced differently on the airline's own website versus OTAs. Always compare across sources before booking. Farefinda shows all available options side by side so you can see the real total cost.

Cape Town is well-served but not over-saturated with routes. Your biggest lever is flexibility — on dates, on routing, and on which booking channel you use. The savings are there if you look.
