Harare's Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) is Zimbabwe's main gateway. The route network is thinner than larger African hubs, but Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, South African Airways, and Kenya Airways all serve the airport, offering solid connecting options.

1. Johannesburg is your best connecting hub

For most international routes from Harare, flying to Johannesburg (JNB) first opens up by far the most options and best prices. JNB has more carrier competition on long-haul routes than HRE, and the Harare–Johannesburg leg is short and inexpensive.

This is especially true for flights to the UK, US, Europe, and Asia.

2. Ethiopian Airlines for East Africa and Asia

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) is the most cost-effective way to reach East Africa or connect to Asia from Harare. ET operates the route regularly with competitive fares.

3. Emirates for the Middle East and beyond

Emirates via Dubai (DXB) is typically the best option for the Gulf region and for connecting to destinations in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

4. Book 10–12 weeks ahead

Harare's international routes are not heavily served, which means cheap seats get snapped up early. 10 to 12 weeks ahead is the right window for international bookings.

5. The cheapest months from Harare

Avoid December–January and July–August. The cheapest travel windows are February–March and September–October.

From Harare, your best strategy is almost always to connect through Johannesburg. Book early and compare total journey prices including the domestic leg.
