Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International (JNB) is one of Africa's busiest hubs — and that works in your favour. More airlines competing on the same routes means more chances to find a low fare. But prices still vary enormously depending on when you search, when you fly, and which booking channel you use.

Here's how to consistently find the cheapest fares out of Johannesburg.

1. Book 4–8 weeks out for the best fares

For most international routes from JNB, the lowest fares appear 4 to 8 weeks before departure. Airlines release discounted seats in this window to fill inventory before the close-in price surge.

Exceptions: peak travel periods like December, Easter, and school holidays in South Africa. For those dates, book 3 to 4 months ahead — prices climb sharply as the dates approach.

> Quick tip: Use Farefinda's price alert feature to track a route. We'll notify you the moment the fare drops to a price worth booking.

2. Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days to fly

Demand drops sharply midweek. Flights departing Tuesday or Wednesday from JNB are consistently cheaper than weekend departures — sometimes by 20–30% on the same route.

If your plans allow any flexibility, even shifting departure by one day can make a meaningful difference.

3. JNB vs CPT — check both airports

If you're travelling from the Western Cape area, it's worth checking Cape Town (CPT) fares too. For some long-haul routes, CPT has better pricing because a different set of airlines compete there.

The reverse is also true — travellers in Cape Town sometimes fly to JNB first and connect internationally, especially to destinations served by airlines that only hub at O.R. Tambo.

4. African routes: consider connecting through hubs

Non-stop flights to other African cities are often surprisingly expensive because of limited competition. Routing through Addis Ababa (ADD), Nairobi (NBO), or Doha (DOH) can cut costs significantly on routes to West Africa, East Africa, and North Africa.

> Example: Johannesburg to Lagos non-stop can cost 2–3x more than routing through Addis Ababa or Nairobi on Ethiopian or Kenya Airways.

5. Use one-way tickets for long-haul

On intercontinental routes from JNB — especially to Europe, the UK, and the Americas — booking two separate one-way fares often undercuts a return fare. This is because different airlines dominate each direction of the same route.

Compare the cost of mixing airlines (outbound on one, return on another) versus a single return ticket before committing.

6. Watch for seasonal fare drops

South African school term dates drive demand on family routes. Outside of:

  • December/January holidays
  • Easter (April)
  • June/July school holidays
...prices on most routes drop noticeably. February, March, August, and October are typically the cheapest months to fly from Johannesburg internationally.

7. Compare total price across booking sites

The same seat is sometimes priced differently on the airline's own website versus an OTA (online travel agency). Always compare both. Also watch for baggage allowance differences — a cheaper headline fare that excludes checked luggage can end up more expensive overall.

Farefinda shows prices from airlines and OTAs side by side so you can see the actual total before you click through.

The key to cheap flights from Johannesburg: fly midweek, book 4–8 weeks out (or earlier for peak periods), and always compare one-way versus return pricing. O.R. Tambo's size gives you real options — take advantage of them.
