Maputo International Airport (MPM) serves Mozambique's capital and is the country's main gateway. LAM Mozambique, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Qatar Airways serve the airport — but the route network is limited, so smart connecting strategies matter.

1. Johannesburg is your gateway to the world

For most international routes from Maputo, flying to Johannesburg (JNB) first is the most practical and cheapest strategy. JNB has far more carrier competition on long-haul routes and the MPM–JNB sector is short and inexpensive.

2. Lisbon offers direct connections to Europe

TAP Air Portugal operates Maputo–Lisbon directly, making Lisbon the most direct European gateway from Mozambique. From Lisbon, connections to the rest of Europe are frequent and often inexpensive.

3. Qatar Airways for the Gulf and beyond

Qatar Airways operates Maputo–Doha and prices the route competitively. Doha is an excellent connecting hub for Asia, India, and Australia.

4. Book 10–14 weeks ahead

Maputo's seat inventory on international routes is limited. 10 to 14 weeks ahead is the right window for cheap fares, especially on direct European or Gulf routes.

5. Cheapest months from Maputo

Avoid December–January and July–August. The best value windows are February–March and September–October.

Maputo's strategy: Johannesburg for most long-haul connections, Qatar for the Gulf, and Lisbon for direct Europe access. Book early.
